APPLICATION IN CONTEXT
Signals from distributed field instruments are collected by a logger and passed to SCADA. Units, scaling, timing and quality states are aligned before irradiance, weather and generation records are interpreted together. 1. Distributed field instruments; 2. Wiring, power and signal interface; 3. Acquire, average and time-stamp; 4. SCADA integration; 5. Gaps, service and quality flags

Signal wiring is separate from array power cables. Missing records are retained as a quality state rather than replaced with zero.

Signal-line directions indicate data transfer. Design sensor power, grounding, termination resistors, and actual communication wiring according to manufacturer specifications.

These conceptual views explain flow direction. Actual piping, wiring and physical flow rates require a separate design.

01 — PROCESS

Where and what will be measured?

Define the intended use and conditions to identify the required role of each item.

01

Create a signal list

Document each sensor’s output, power supply, address, format, and units.

02

Acquisition and storage

Configure sampling, averaging, integration, time synchronization, and recovery from faults.

03

Quality checks and use

Identify out-of-range readings, stuck values, missing data, and timestamp differences, and account for them in performance analysis.

02 — SELECTION

What should be selected and verified?

A working sensor communication connection does not establish that the data are correct. Define units, timestamps, addresses, scaling factors, and missing-data handling so that irradiance, weather, and generation data use the same reference conventions.

Analog signalsVoltage / current inputInput range, resolution, conversion equation, grounding, and cables
Time handlingTimestamps, intervals, and integrationUTC or local time, sampling and averaging intervals, and missing-data handling
Quality statusFlags and historyIdentification of sensor faults, cleaning, calibration, and abnormal values

Review sensor suitability against the objective, installation environment, calibration evidence, system configuration and supplier specifications.

03 — OPERATING CHECKS

Use measurement data to identify improvements.

Distinguish raw data from corrected values

Preserve sensitivity values, correction equations, and revision history so that the data can be reviewed again.

Do not replace missing values with zero

A communication fault differs from a genuine zero reading at night. Distinguish them with separate quality status indicators.

Compare data from the same time

Different time zones or averaging intervals for irradiance and generation data can distort performance indicators.

04 — QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Does Modbus support mean a device can be connected immediately?

In addition to the physical connection, power supply, addresses, communication settings, and register formats must be matched.

Do constant readings indicate stability?

A stuck value may indicate a sensor or communication fault. Check the rate of change and consistency with other sensors.
